Deserts do get hot. I've been through Death Valley in the summer. It may not be optimal but it is an experience. I think trying to get in as much as we can this trip is the goal as it will likely be the last "family" big road trip. Summer jobs and hormones will likely be our future from there out.
Am wondering if we cut out LA and Vegas if it might be possible. We were in San Fran this last summer so won't need to stop there. Will have to see what is possible if we drive 6 to 10 hours, stop for two nights someplace nice then carry on.
While it is a bit "adventuristic" to just point the truck south and head out - something I would like to do someday - the lack of reservations at decent camp grounds would likely turn into Walmart parking lots?? No offence to those that "camp" there but it's not my current idea of fun.
Thanks
