  • Best to stay on 46 and not turn at shandon. Go to Paso Robles and then take 101 to Atascadero. I live in Atascadero so I drive both road serval times a year.

  • We take 41 frequently. Much nicer now that sections from Reef City west have been repaved. The only "warning" is if you're using a GPS and heading south of Paso Robles, the GPS MAY want to send you on 41 through Shandon a couple miles past the Cholame rest stop. Even if you are going that way DO NOT make the left onto 41. Stay on 46 to 101.

One other tip: after the light at Golden Hill Road in Paso(basically the first stop light after Reef City), you may want to consider moving into the left lane at your first opportunity if you're going south on 101.
  • Hwy. 41 is a easy drive for an RV, just take your time and enjoy the trip. I always fill up with diesel at the the I-5 and hwy. 41 exit that goes into the town of Avenal. Make sure your radar is turned on and working, the "bears" work Hwy. 41 & 46 both west and east bound.

  • mamestra: If you are a James Dean fan you may be intereted in the monument at Cholamne, which is at the intersection of where 41 & 46 meet. (Jack Ranch Cafe) That is where Dean met his demise in a traffic accident.
  • 41 0r 46 is great - like bob said rolling hills - did it with my 24 ft trailer. 46 is prettier and you end up in paso - which has a nice rv park next to a winery: wine country rv.
  • Should be no problem, just some rolling hills. No steep grades to talk about. Have a Great Trip!
