What is the best time of the year for this ( I plan a 6 week trip)and what should I try to see on our first trip? I'm thinking mid May thru June. Do I need to make reservations this time of year? what...

I just 'resurrected' the post that was started a couple months ago called "Roll Call Alaska 2017". You'll find it on this forum under 'RVing in Canada and Alaska'. Check on it often and you'll find folks adding to it all winter long.
Also look at the very top of 'RVing in Canada and Alaska' and you'll see a 'Sticky' titled 'Helpful Ideas for Alaskan Travels' which will give you some hints.
The ongoing post for this past summer's trip was titled 'Roll Call Alaska 2016' and it got 774 posts so you can be sure that the 'Roll Call Alaska 2017' will get just as much activity. That will be the place where you'll find lots of good information including from those that have already taken the trip and from those just inquiring. You'll have lots of good reading all winter long. :)
