The hardest part of freeway driving in Ca. has to be merging traffic on a freeway. A few times we'd accelerate up a ramp to 65 and be in the clear to merge onto the freeway but had a car intentionally speed up to block us. It can also be tricky when travelling down the rightmost lane at 65 and having to move left to allow traffic to merge in ahead of you.
Totally agree. On many stretches where there are 3 lanes or more, it is often acceptable to travel in the second lane. Sometimes it's posted, like I-5 through Sacramento, and sometimes it's not, like Hwy 80 through Vacaville. I take the lead from the 18 wheelers and see what lane they travel in. In these busy areas, you don't want to be stuck in the far right lane as many of the onramps are really short and you will either be cutting someone off or they will be cutting you off. And as you mentioned, if the 4 wheelers can cut in front of you, they will. Be safe out there fellas.
Cutting people off towing seems to be the only way to do it once you get into the urban areas in California. I'm fine with that but I did get honked at more than a few times. We came into LA on the 14 and then took the 5 through to Anaheim, and we hit town Sunday afternoon so there was quite a lot of traffic. When we left town at 2:00 am it was partly to get an early start on a long drive and partly because the freeways are mostly empty that time of day so we were long gone before things got busy.
