Campers with gross mass over 3.5 tons

I would personally risk it, since if you are planning on going farther south into CA not having it could become expensive and difficult as some people have now found out. I think the odds are pretty good if you get the 10 year, they won't say a word coming in from the north.

Truck camper owner here.

Even if you remove the jacks, the tie-down are so onerous (imposing), that anyone inspecting the rig could readily see that the camper isn't part of the truck.

So here is an idea I have been thinking about. I am assuming the 'Secretariat of Communications and Transportation' is who determines what 'Capacidad de Carga' means in Banjercito's rule for the 3.5 ton load limit. Since the confusing is stemming from how the agents at the border are defining that rule, how does one go about contacting someone from that agency and get a written definition clearly stating that it does not mean GVWR but rather the total weight minus the vehicle weight? Can a lawyer in Mexico help us with getting clarification once and for all? If we are able to obtain a letter from them we can disseminate the document for people to present at the Banjercito office when applying for a TIP.

Then I would cancel the 10 year permit each year. Good insurance.

Technically a truck camper is not vehicle and there fore no 10 year permit. Chris you do not have choice with an RV. Only 10 year permits are issued. If the truck gets a 6 month and they make a fuss about the camper it either becomes cargo or you have to pay import fees. Most of the time they do not say anything.

Mexican customs might be looking at the pickup truck and camper as two separate units, the truck that will get a 180 day import permit and a cargo box that is not permanently attached to the truck and they consider it cargo and not a motor home, as opposed to a class A or C or even a small B that is fully enclosed and self propelled, in Spanish motor home is "casa rodante" (rolling home), and this can be interpreted by the individual Aduandros or Banjercito personell completely different from what we see and know.

Heavy duty pick up trucks are a hot comodity for the narcos, steel the unit use the shell or dump it and they have a disposable cargo carrier, or just plain miss information or interpretation.

That's all great, but it doesn't answer the issue that some people are having, unless you are saying people should not take a truck and pick up camper to Mexico.

We had to get a 10 year TIP once before (as stated previously in this post)We turned it in when we left Mexico because of the problems it could cause if we ever sold the camper etc as mentioned here. Will probably consider getting the 10 year TIP and then turn it in each year when we leave Mexico. Hopefully that will help at the border crossing. Can you get a 1 year TIP for an RV?
