normally when we travel south from Upstate NY we go through NJ and take the eastern shore and over the CBBT before connecting up with I95 in Emporia. I want to try the I84 to I81 to I64 to I95 route when we go to DW in October. Would appreciate some campground recommendations convenient to I81 and north of New Market. THX

We have stayed at the Jellystone in Luray. I believe it was about 8 miles off of I-81, but that might be wrong. It was very nice, but kinda pricey. It has lots and lots of activities for kids as well as adults. There is also a KOA there in Luray.

There is Candy Hill campground in Winchester, Va. that is a short drive off I-81. There is also Endless Caverns and a KOA both on Rt. 11 south of New Market. There are more campground north and south of Staunton. There is also a Flying J in Winchester and a Wal-Mart in Woodstock if you want a free overnight stop. You cannot park overnight in the Virginia rest areas. I am not sure about West Virginia, which has a rest area right after you cross the Potomac River. Plus there are several Cracker Barrel restaurants along I-81 so you have options.

Candy Hill in Winchester.Then take I81 to I66 east to US17 south to I95 south. It is shorter and less hilly.

I have stayed at the Battle of Cedar Creek Campground for an overnight on the way back from my trip south. It is at exit 298 of I81. Nothing fancy, good pull-throughs.

We make the trip from Florida to way-Upstate NY every Spring and usually try a different route each time. This past Spring we spent a couple of nights at a fairly new campground just North of New Market. Shenandoah Family Campground168 Industrial Park Road, Mt. Jackson (Quicksburg), Virginia 22842 (540) 477-3080.It is just a mile off I-81 and a nice young couple run it. It is also a Passport America campground if you are a member.That said, after years of travel on I-81 and I-95, we have found the fastest and best transition from I-81 to I-95 for us has been taking US-17 from Winchester, VA to Fredericksburg, VA. We've pulled a 38' 5th Wheel without any problems and it takes you through some nice Virginia horse country.
