To determine your credit card benefits, it depends how you use your card. We use airline miles with great results from a airline specific credit card that carries an annual fee and foreign transactions fees.
We recently flew from Seattle to Johannesburg, SA and return on Emirates Airlines in business class. We paid a total of $72 in fees and taxes for tickets that would have cost more that $32,000. I know, who would really pay that much, but that was the posted rate!!
We have investigated no fee credit cards, with no transaction fees or black-out dates. . . but the results were disappointing for our situation, and the flights that we wanted were not available. I know that we could have different cards for different uses, but we do better by accumulating miles and paying a few fees.
