Canadians RVing to Alaska

We are thinking of an Alaska trip with our fifth wheel, and are wondering if any Canadians could give us advice on applying for sabbaticle from province and also visa for stay in U.S. Longer than the usual six months.

As Sue stated, there is a colon and 's' within the post and it looks like a one time glitch. It is the same code as the smilies option on the forum replies.

I never saw this happen before in all my years on the forum. :h

We'll need to keep an eye on this.

  • a colon and an S = :s

There is a colon and an S in that URL
  • I am curious as to whether the overstay is a federal or provincial matter. I think provincial but I need to do some research. I will do some digging tomorror.

  • thanks, we do file 8840. But to leave our province for more than seven months and still qualify for Cdn Medicare we need to apply for sabbaticle. Just wondering if anyone in this forum has any experience with applying.
  • After 2 months in Alaska, you have to re-enter Canada to get into the rest of the States, so your 6 months starts over. I don't know what you mean about getting a sabbatical from New Brunswick, though - no permission is required, although if you actually gave up your NB address there could be a few complications such as medical and licensing.

The issue that you may be faced with is an IRS income tax requirement after 182 days in any given calendar year. Even if the Customs & Immigration folks agree to provide addional time in country, the IRS folks are a different entity and may want to collect income taxes.
  • Do you plan to be in Alaska for six months
OR in Alaska for some weeks and some time in the Lower 48?

Will you be returning to Canada at any point during the six month period?
