Hi Mex,
Because, as Canadians, we don't pay much "out of pocket" for health care, we gripe about the costs of additional coverage.
The other side of that coin is that we have more than one company providing "extra insurance" for out of country travel. In at least one case, the company has so much red tape that you need to be both a physician and a lawyer to properly answer their "easy" questionnaire. Make *one* mistake and bingo--no coverage. Their shareholders love it.
The best bang for the buck, imo, comes from Credit unions. I have a "master card" that automatically covers me for 2 weeks for free (it used to be 30 days, sigh). In reality the extra coverage would make most American's think they had "hit the jackpot" because the costs, comparatively speaking are MUCH lower than what an American pays on a daily basis for insurance.
All the health insurance companies do their darnedest to get you back home, because the moment the patient is in a Canadian Hospital their costs drop to near zero.
