I am actually not an employee, i just do stuff for a friend. I am not paid, unless I do a route as a wagon master, even then I have done it for just expenses. I just like to keep busy.
I don't recomend anything. With this latest information, I just want to ensure participants are warned about policies that may not cover, or better still just tell them to check out whomever they use. I see no problem with giving them a list of alternatives to check out, its the same we do with vehicle insurance, give them the info and tell them its up tp them to decide. We are not in the business of selling insurance or telling custoemrs whom to use. I have had a bit of a disagreement with vagabundos (with whom we are associated) over insurance in the past. They sell auto insurance, but we distance ourselves from that, just make customers aware they sell it. In fact, another company which many recommend, Lewis & Lewis, offered me 10% commision to sell their insurance. I told them just offer a 10% discount to the customers instead. If someone has an issue, I don't want them coming after me. If I took commission, they could.
As for medical, using a high deductible seems to reduce costs considerably and most can handle being dinged $1000. Its the big ticket condition you need to insure against. I think the high premiums form Canadian companies is due to the fact you are paying insurance covering the US when you are actually in much cheaper mexico. If you can find a US company to cover you in Mexico and then buy separate insurance to cover US transit, you will likely be better off. The big issue is most companies insist you buy it before leaving. You cna fix that by buying 2 concurrent policies for the southbound transit. Its the northbound segment that is tricky.
