A lot has changed in 5 or 6 years as I said before some airports were not hooked to the system and the paperwork was not checked, today they are getting smarter, there have been a lot of Mexicans that brought vehicles to Mexico with a TIP and then flew out leaving them for the family, I know of one vehicle that was in Mexico for 8 years before it was confiscated.
If the vehicle in question is registered in the USA or Canada in both wife and husbands name, both can drive the vehicle in Mexico but only the person in whose name the vehicle was temporarily imported can take it out of Mexico, should the person that is not registered in the vehicle's importation papers try to take it out, the vehicle might be confiscated.
Only way to return a vehicle with out the person that imported it in is with a death certificate stating that that person is deceased and the vehicle is being retuned to the USA, tones of paperwork.
