Caravan Rant

Just need to vent a little.

All these caravans marching around Alaska are starting to really agrivate me. They come into campgrounds and make it difficult for those of us with the gumption of going alone to find a camp site.

When they come in it's like watching the parade of circus elephants. They clog up the entrances with everyone in line. What really gets me is that they don't seem to care about anyone else. All there folks being hearded around like sheep!

OK, I feel better now!

  • My advice would be to arrive early at the campground you choose and to be flexible and maybe not have to have full hook ups at every stop. Lots of beautiful places to dry camp. We even dry camped in private campgrounds a couple of times because it was so much cheaper
  • One solution....boondock. You don't need a campground every night, and there are many great boondocking spots on the Alaska Highway. I do have to agree, however, that the caravans take over wherever they are.
  • Wow, surprised to hear such harsh judgement about a group of fellow RV'ers. :(

Regarding filling up CG spots they are no different than 'any' and 'all RV's coming in a CG and 'filling up a spot'.

Why is waiting in line to check in at a CG because there are others in front of you, such a big deal?

Just a bit shocked that RV'ers would bash other RV'ers how they choose to travel.
  • I agree. On our last trip to Alaska it seemed almost all our stops were affected by caravans. In fact our entire drive down the Cassier Hwy was also affected, the caravan was either pushing us hard behind us or holding us up in front, then we'd get to a campground and have to wait in line for a long time to even check in. We commented that it seems so odd that so many people don't seem to be able to handle a trip there on their own??

    Sheeple.
A few years back, we were in a CG in Fairbanks that gets a ton of caravan traffic. My wife headed to the shower, and ran into an odd issue with a herd of caravan sheeple. My wife is paralyzed on her left side, but manages to walk with a cane. She was attempting to cross a recreation room of some type, to get to the showers, in the far corner of the room. The room was full of groups of caravaners standing and talking, and they simply wouldn't get out of the way. She slowly marched forward into the herd, with a lot of polite "excuse me" said, to encourage a bit of good behavior from the sheeple. Eventually, she was at a near shout volume as she pushed thru.

She was quite amazed by this total failure of decency from a group of english speaking seniors, as she is a middle school special education teacher, and never had this problem with large groups of limited children. This is NOT an isolated incident, BTW. On another occasion, I walked into a public space of a CG to grab my laundry, and was blocked by a blue haired elderly lady in her "gang colors" ( the cheap matching nylon windbreakers all the caravanners wear) She told me that they were having a "private event". I then had to tell her that, no she was blocking the entrance to the laundry area, and I was going to get my wash"

Bottom line is that the caravan traffic is a very important part of a shrinking group of land based travelers, who traveled from the lower 48 and the more populated Canadian provinces. The Highway is hurting, in some respects, and every time we take the trek (about every five years) there are fewer and fewer businesses still surviving to service the summer tourist traffic. In that respect, all traffic is important. It would be nice however, if some of the individuals, and wagon masters, step back and take a moment to reflect on the fact that they are not special, and the world doesn't revolve around them.
  • Understand your frustation. I wanted to reserve for 10days but couldn't had to split 4 /6 days to stay in the CG and I reserved like 6 months ago on the opening day of reservations. Ok what the problem was these people who reserved I found out (btw they stayed one night ) have priority the following year for the same site for the same dates, they CAN reserve 1 year in advance!
  • but ain,t it fun to watch? I,m sure theres some entertainment watching them adjust there rigs.
