Caravan Rant

I have gone on several caravans. I am hardly a sheepie. I can and do plan most of our trips and purposely move out of our comfort zone. We enjoy caravans in part because they can get us into a lot of venues and tours we would not otherwise be able to enjoy. We also enjoy the comrodery. Although we have no problem making friends in campgrounds. And have sat around many a campfire with our new friends. As to a caravan clogging up registration most caravans have preregistered us and we get in quickly. Most caravans travel pell mell so there should not be several rigs in a row and of course normal courtesy and laws do apply. The only true criticism I have of a caravan is that we/they tend to not socialize with others while on a caravan. As others have said to each his own.

Well, this is a useful thread. I think that when I plan my Yukon and Alaska trip (next year??), I will plan to do it after caravan season. I assume that's after Labour Day, right?

(And yes, we carry chains for both the truck and the trailer, in case of a September snowstorm.)

I can understand the desire for a caravan, even though it is not for me. If I were to go back to Baja, that is what I would do, even though I speak Spanish well. It helps to have someone who knows the local customs.

All these caravans marching around Alaska are starting to really agrivate me. They come into campgrounds and make it difficult for those of us with the gumption of going alone to find a camp site.

When they come in it's like watching the parade of circus elephants. They clog up the entrances with everyone in line. What really gets me is that they don't seem to care about anyone else. All there folks being hearded around like sheep!

Yea its fun to watch them have fit when the electrical goes out.We used RV parks for showers, laundry and internet, this is what happen at one of the RV park we used and a large group was there, power dropped out for about 1-1/2 hour. The group leader was on the phone within 10 minutes complaining to the power company that his coach was getting hot. Everyone of those coaches had generators and house battery banks!

Now if they hold the laundry washers and dryers for their friends and other people were there before their friends then that is rude. Being obnoxiously noisy after quiet hour is also rude.

Are these things the exception or the rule. I haven't ever been camping where there are caravans but plan on doing so next year.

Not for me I guess as my fires are usually of epic proportions, and I have been known to pass out and wake up at 3 am with the fire burnt out, freezing in the rain, with my faithful Labrachow patiently sitting beside me. What will they think of next....no fires at all LOL.

This might last me Friday and Saturday nights....maybe

Just curious about your post. I am very familiar with quiet times at campgrounds but "fire out" times not so much. Where are their campgrounds with fire out times? Alaska? Canada ........

I was surprised too but they are out there. We actually stayed in a 'fire out' campground 4 years ago in Pennsylvania. Everything had to be done by 10pm weekdays and 11pm weekends.

Imagine that, I know it was not a PA state park? Was it?
