The banks actually charge you a very poor exchange rate; it is better than a retail store but still not the best.
To the OP: When you enter Canada, just stop at the first ATM and withdraw some cash. That exchange rate will be the best you will find. It is also very convenient to just charge as much as you can and let the credit card company give you another great exchange rate. Watch, as some cards do charge a fee for exchange transactions- some as much as 3%.
VERY IMPORTANT: Be sure to call any credit card company you will use in Canada as well as any bank you will be using the ATM card before you leave the USA and tell them you will be using the card in Canada. Otherwise, they will stop all card transactions.
