CBBT - Seagull Island - RV - EZ Off/On...

We're heading down to Kiptopeke SP for the weekend tomorrow. And to sho the granddaughter the CBBT and Seagull Island.

Just can't remember - is the island Restaurant/Gift shop pull off best done going SOUTH in an RV? Or North? I seem to remember it's at the southern end of the south tunnel, but I can't for the life of me remember whether the pull off is best heading south, or north. Don't want to have to pull a mid-span U turn in the Bounder... :)

Thanks.

Jim

Jim, I take it you aren't pulling a toad?
Affirmative, just the 34' Bounder. With a toad it might be a bit more of a struggle, especially in times of higher traffic. As noted, we were lucky in that the on-island traffic was not too bad.
  • Quick Update - for a southbound RV, it's not TOO bad - you do have to make a hard right just up out of the tunnel, and it helps if you can swing a bit left before hand. We were lucky yesterday in that there was not a lot of traffic, even mid-day. We pulled into an RV spot on the right side of the western lanes, had a nice lunch at the upgraded restaurant, and then made a fairly easy, 2-step U turn to get headed south bound again. For those unfamiliar with the place, there are two lanes of traffic around the little island, which straddles the southern entrance of the south tunnel. No matter which direction you're going, you have go back out the way you came in. If you are North bound, you pull off BEFORE the tunnel entrance, and then just get back onto the roadway and head down into it. Either way, in a long vehicle (and god forbid a 5er...) it's a bit complex to get turned around and then back on the main drag, since there's no accel lane or anything - I just had to wait until traffic coming up OUT of the tunnel cleared enough for me to get going - the good thing is, the dual lanes start up very quickly, so anybody zooming up on me would have a left lane to pass in.
  • Jim,

I took another at Google Earth. I would be surprised if a left turn across the southbound lane is allowed to go back northbound. However, the parking area has a wide U at far the northern end, which allows traffic to cross to the other side. You can then make a sharp right turn to get onto the northbound lane.

As far as turning around in the parking area to continue southbound, a K-turn may be the only choice.

I also see what looks like RV parking along the outer edge on both sides.
  • This thread made me curious to check it out because I will be heading through/across the CBBT soon myself. It appears to me that that southbound right turn into the parking area should be do-able with any rig. There's plenty of space in the median to allow for about as wide a turn as anyone would need.

Just my opinion of course. I accept no responsibility for any mishaps that may occur as a direct result of someone placing credence in my opinion. :-)
  • Well, duh, you think I would have thought of G/E?...(smacks head with 2X4...) :)

It does look a little tight making that U-bie after the tunnel, but I can't believe I'd be the first M/H to do it...the trick seems to be heading back in the same direction you were going - We'll be going North to South, and assuming we can make the big right turn out of the tunnel, then we somehow have to get turned around and be able to continue heading South - which looks like a U-bie somewhere in the parking lot..even more funner...did they not consider a large vehicle wanting to continue on in the same direction after stopping there? It would be just as tough going north - you'd need to make a crossing IN FRONT of the traffic coming up out of the tunnel to be able to turn LEFT down into the tunnel... wha?....
  • If you have Google Earth on your PC, you can zoom in to take a real close look (I just did that). The restaurant is on the south end of the southern tunnel. Going southbound, it looks like a real sharp right U-turn to get into the parking lot immediately after exiting the tunnel. Might be too tight for an RV, depending on length. Going northbound, it's a shallow right turn to enter the parking area, but that means that you would have to drive all the way across the bridge to the Virginia Beach end, turn around and pay again.
