Whatever happened to buying a RV in the states and selling it when you're done? That would be the best way not to spend a fortune on RV rent.
I think 9/11 happened to it... It's not as simple as it used to be to buy a vehicle in the US anymore, if you're not a citizen. Basically, you need to have a local (state-issued) driving license and that can take a while (I'm not sure how people work around the permanent address issue, but I know it's doable). Then you actually have to buy the right vehicle (or RV), which can take a couple of weeks, and you have to allow for another couple of weeks for selling in the end. All in all, it can take up to 4-6 weeks of your trip. We've researched this thoroughly several years ago, prior to embarking on a 5 months long trip in the US. The conclusion was that it could be a good fit for anyone who wants to travel for nine months or more. Anything shorter and it's just easier to pay for the rental.
