Cleveland to St Petersburg in August

We are going to be traveling from the Cleveland area back to St Petersburg the first week of August. We have a week to make the trip with 3 young kids. We are searching for a different way to go or new areas to stop at along the way.

On the way up we are spending a week in the Smokie Mountains. Have done DC and Stone mountain on other trips.

We somewhere that won't be too painfully HOT (I know that is a lot to ask for August). Want something fun for us to do on the way.

Any suggestions are welcome.

  • What about along the east coast? Any good campground in NC or SC that are on the ocean that aren't too HOT?
  • Water Parks in Virginia: http://www.virginia.org/waterparks/
In Virginia, Kings Dominion near Richmond and Busch Gardens Williamsburg.
Haven't been there but Canaan Valley Resort in West Virginia has lots to do.
average temp in August is 75 degrees but record high of 93. whew!
We also like Tanglewood County Park in Clemmons NC (north of Charlotte). They have lots of activities including swimming pool. Reasonable rates. I would make reservations.
