Cody, WY to Buffalo, WY.

We re planning on taking hwy 14/16/20 east from Cody to Buffalo in a 40' motorhome. Google map shows two tight switchbacks on that route as we get closer to Buffalo.

Is this route feasible for a 40 footer and is there anything else I should know about that route.
  • Here’s an article describing the routes over the Big Horns. The central route is currently a bad option as there’s construction near Burgess Junction on Route 14. It’s currently a long, bumpy stretch of dirt road. It’s been awhile since I went through there, but your route is the best option.
  • Steep, windy, lots of switchbacks.....25mph speed.....few places to pull over. Past discussions on this route indicate many RVers have sworn this route to be a never again experience.....and some say no big deal.
  • I would suggest US 14 to Greybull, US 20 south to Worland, US 16 east to Buffalo. Ten Sleep is a neat little town, worthy of a stop to stretch the legs. Ten Sleep to Buffalo is not a difficult drive at all, though it's a bit of a climb from west to east, but no tight curves that would be a problem for your rig.

One thing to be aware of...the route between Buffalo and Ten Sleep is popular with motorcyclists, so just a heads up to keep an eye out. One time on that route heading east to west, a bunch of them came up on me from behind and passed me on a curve. A bit unnerving.
  • Well shoot...a couple of locals in Cody told me that the route I am contemplating is no big deal. After reading the replies, that I appreciate, I'm not sure that I want to take this route.

I may have to rethink this intended route. I would like to hear a few more responses from people that have take this route before I hit the road. Thank-you for the quick replies to my inquiry...Don
  • With our 40' MH we've taken Cody to Greybull; south to Worland; east to Ten Sleep and on to Buffalo. We didn't find it a difficult drive. Any of the routes east you will have 5-7% grades. Your MH is very capable of doing the drive and there are no tight switchbacks to be concerned about. Yes, you'll have a steep uphill and downhill but folks won't be driving interstate speeds. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It's a very popular RV route.
  • Any of the routes are very doable.....if you are comfortable with grades and are somewhat experienced! Over the last 15 or so years, there have been several Motorhome loss of brakes ( riding and overheating). The final results were .....”final”!
  • Thank-you for all the replies. I've owned motorhomes for 30 years and our current one has a 2 stage engine(jake) brake. I rarely have to touch the service brakes going down hill. My concerns have been put to rest...Thanks again.
