We've not needed a lantern on any of our trips. A flashlight covers off the occasional night time trip to the outhouse. Headlamps are handy too, keeping the hands free.
Here at the cabin power goes off often in the winter. I have a couple of battery-operated lanterns that are smaller than a soup can when stored that also throw a lot of light (80 lumens). Legs fold down for table top use or it can be hung from a hook. Efficient on the batteries too. Can't think of when I last changed the batteries!
