Colorado to Taos, NM

Any knowledge of routes from Colorado to Taos? I'm considering taking US 160 from I 25 at Walsenburg west to Ft Garland, CO then CO 159 south till it becomes NM 522 then follow for another 44 miles onto Taos. I see that we will cross the 9400' La Vita pass on 160 but is there anything else to consider? Any alternative route suggestions?
I'll be driving a 40' coach with toad.

  • Miles,
I don't fish fresh water but Lake Okeechobee is legendary for bass fishing. Check out Roland Martin marina in Clewiston on the south rim. There likely are also guides etc on the north rim in the town of Okeechobee I've heard tales of strikes on every cast and 100 bass hooked up in a few hours. Go hunt some wild hogs while you're there.
Beyond lake O, there are plenty of streams, smaller lakes etc in the northern section of Fl. Check out Lake Seminole.
  • La Veta is a piece of cake. Easiest pass we did in Colorado.
  • Planning this also for next year with a Kenworth pulling a 39' 5th wheel so watching along for any info, thanks.
  • Thank you Miles and Lynn! Any questions about Florida?
  • Yes, that's a good route into town. Your alternative is to go south to Raton, NM and catch Hwy 64. But then you'll have two passes (Raton and Palo Flechado) rather than just one (La Veta). As Miles pointed out, La Veta is just a big bump in the road anyway.
    :)

  • That is a good route. The view of Blanca Peak is beautiful. La Veta Pass isn't much more than a big hill as far as Colorado passes go. Have a safe trip.
