Columbia, SC to Valdosta, GA

We will be travelling from Charlotte, NC to Valdosta on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Most of the mapping programs run us out I26 to I95 then back west from Brunswick, GA. I95 in SC is always a traffic nightmare and am looking for alternates. Pulling a 33' Open Range with a Ram CTD. Any suggestions appreciated.
  • Let us know how this route worked for you. Sunday after Thanksgiving is a day to avoid I75 in GA at all costs, so I think you made a good decision. I am just about 70-80 miles north of Valdosta and will be heading toward NC (via Columbia) at Christmas, so I am interested in how your route worked out.
  • Thanks all. Think I've got it set. We are leaving Concord, NC (actually the Charlotte Speedway) and taking I77 south to Columbia where we will pickup I26 and travel east to exit 139 (Fuel stop and leave the Interstates). Move a bit south on highway 22 to US21 into Orangeburg where we will pick up US301. We will stay on 302 into GA where we will hit US 84 and take it into Valdosta. We have reservations near Lake Park, GA. Should miss all that holiday return traffic and it will be a more enjoyable (less boring) drive.
  • 441 to Homer then 84 (4 lane) to Valdosta. I have used 441 all the way from North Carolina to Florida I10. Great route thru farm lands and small towns. Nice alternative to interstates. Pine forests, cotton fields, peanut farms, onion farms etc. Light mostly local traffic. Mostly dead flat in Georgia.
  • we just came from there..we're in Bainbridge right now.. I85 ....found highway 441 @ Athens..to highway 129 below Macon..then I75..no problem..bypassing Atlanta totally.
    In fact..bypass Columbia..Athens..all cities.

nice state parks on the way..
  • My iPad mapping software shows a route from Columbia to Augusta then down to Valdosta. Same time as going 95. Basically 77 to 20 to 520 and then a bunch of others roads.

We go from Columbia to Tallahassee,Fla quite often...we go out I-20 to Madison and use exit 113 which is rt 83...stay on rt 83 all the way to I-75 just above Macon...then 75 to Valdosta...83 is a good 2 lane all the way...trucks use it....with no problem.Chuck

I'd probably go Interstates to Augusta and then 25 & 56 to Swainsboro and then 297 to Vidalia. Then various to Hazlehurst/Douglas/Valdosta as S Ga rural roads are pretty good two lane roads without a lot of towns or traffic.
