Conditions at Glacier NP

I am scheduled to go to St. Mary's in east Glacier on 6/24, with the recent snows and flooding what are the conditions there now?. I understand that the Road to the Sun is not going to open on the 20th due to a 40 foot snow drift , and I was really looking forward to riding a Red Coach on that road. Do I keep my plans, or do I cancel?
  • Well, "conditions in the park" is really a broad topic, because elevations vary.

Kalispell is at 3000 feet. Apgar is about 3200 feet, so weather is much the same. Avalanche CG is 3500 ft, and the hike to Avalanche Lake (4000 ft) is beautiful.

St Mary is higher at 4550 feet, and Many Glacier is at 4950, so the east side will be colder. And if you want to hike trails at even higher elevations, you'd likely run into snow. So it all depends on where you want to go in Glacier. I'd say if you find it too cold or snowy on the east side, loop around the south end of the park and stay on the west side where it should be fine.

I was there the year they set a new record for lateness of opening the Sun Road (July 13), and traveled to Logan Pass on that day. Short sleeve weather at Many Glacier, but at the pass it was pretty chilly with huge snowbanks. Still I got some great pictures of a bighorn up there.
  • Here's the official Glacier website:

    Glacier National Park

As far as continuing your trip, if you have not been to Glacier I think it would be worthwhile to go even though you might not be able to do all you have planned. You can still drive Going to the Sun Rd. part way from either direction and if the weather holds they might have the whole thing plowed by then.
  • I haven't been to Glacier so I do not have first hand knowledge. The weather here in Kalispell has been cool and damp. However it has turned around and is in the 70s for the next week. However be aware it snowed hard in the park last week. I'd suggest either looking at the park website or call the park for info.
  • Maybe someone who is nearby Glacer will have more info, but I did check this website http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/wrh/rec/index.php?wfo=GNP and things look decent at the lower elevations where you would camp. Apgar CG near the west entrance, for example, shows highs in the 70s and lows in the low 40s. I would think that the mountain peaks are looking majestic with snow on them.
