Correction to Directions for La Paz bypass
A correction to some misleading directions in the Mike and Terri Church book Camping Mexico’s Baja:
What the book shows and says:
The map for La Paz and the route outlined for the bypass is a bit unclear, on the map it shows three triangle markers for Liverpool, Home Depot and Soriana in that order all in a line.
The text reads: “When you arrive at the Dove Statue (Whales Tail) at the entrance to La Paz take the right fork and zero your odometer. It’s usually marked for La Paz Libramiento. In just .7 miles at the stop sign take the right turn.”
What you ACTUALLY see and should do:
Bear right at the Dove statue as it says in the book. Very soon there will be a huge shopping complex on your right. (and your left) You will come to a Stop Sign. Do NOT turn right. It only takes you into the parking lots of the shopping centers. Instead proceed just a bit further on to the first STOP LIGHT. Be sure you are in the far right lane. HOME DEPOT will be on your right. (not Soriana as the map implies)
The book is correct that this turn as far as we could tell was not marked.
Note that in contrast to the way the book shows the stores and leads you to believe you should be seeing the Soriana on your right at the turn. The Soriana is actually up the street you turn right on and Behind Home Depot.
This is admittedly a small issue but was confusing people when we were there.
Continuing on the road you will come to a “T” this is in fact Mexico 1 and is signed but the sign is bent down and is easy to miss. Turn right to go to Cabo and Los Barriles. Turn LEFT to go to Pichilingue and Ventana.
This is also a confusing part: if you are going out to Pichilingue turn left at the T at Mexico 1, cross the bridge and make the first right. This is not marked as far as I could see. This is the way to the Ferry terminal and some great deserted beaches.
Admittedly the signage and stop lights may have been added after the book was published. Most of the directions we have seen in the book are correct but there are quite a few changes like the one above that we have noticed.
