Credit card/cash questions for travel in Canada

I just opened a "no foreign transaction fee" MasterCard from my credit union for our trip through Canada to Alaska. My other card charges 2 percent.

Last year I forgot to tell the CC company we were going on vacation and had the card cut off at the first gas stop into Wyoming. I had to call and convince them I was the card holder and they turned the card back on.
