Credit card/cash questions for travel in Canada

We will be traveling through Ontario and Quebec on an upcoming trip and it's been years since I've visited Canada, so I have a few questions about credit card usage.

1) Discover is our preferred credit card is it widely accepted?

2) Do the Canadian Provinces using "chipped" credit cards exclusively like the European countries?

3) I've read that it's a good idea to get cash back from a retailer such as Walmart as opposed to using exchange facilities. Opinions?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Doug
  • Discovery cards aren't nearly as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard. Some retailers will accept them, but you would want to check before shopping.
Machines almost always accept chipped cards but also allow you to swipe or tap.
Walmart doesn't charge a service charge for cash advances, so saves a few dollars. But you are also limited in the amount of cash they will give you.
  • Discover cards are not used as much as Visa or Mastercard, but are widely accepted in major places.

Yes, we use chipped cards, and tap for purchases in some places.

You can get cash back if you pay with a debit card that comes directly out of your account. You can't get cash back if you use your credit card because that would be like a cash advance as you don't have to pay until statement is due.
