A problem with trying to get to Reno from the NW is you have cross the Coast mountains north of CA20 (Clearlake) - or backtrack a bit.
US101 south to CA20 is the easiest way out of the coast. East of I5, CA20 climbs into the Sierras and joins I80 to cross over Donner.
I5 or 99 south to Bakersfield, and CA58 over Tehachapi to the high desert is probably the best combination for avoiding high passes and urban traffic.
