Take 101 to CA20 south of Willits. Take 20 over to I5 and go south to I210, about 400 miles, at the very north side of L.A. Don't worry, you will be about 35-40 miles from the city and traffic isn't bad after about nine in the morning.
Take I210 east about 100 miles until it runs into I10, just east of Redlands. Then stay on I10 all the way to Quartzsite.
There are other ways to do it but this is probably the most direct and least problematic when it come to weather and traffic.
