We are visiting the west coast from KS. In a few days we will be returning home from the Crescent City, CA area and wondered if highway 299 to Redding, south from Redding to highway 36 to highway 395...

IMHO 299 is a horrible road! Several climbs and decents, lots of twists and turns, and very slow driving. You would be far better off driving 101 south a bit further and take 20. Just before Clear Lake, you can turn south around the lake avoiding most of the congestion coming back on 20 on the east of the lake. This route takes maybe 90 minutes from 101 to I5. From here its a short drive to Sacramento and I80 east
