Crescent City, Redding, CA to Reno, NV
We are visiting the west coast from KS. In a few days we will be returning home from the Crescent City, CA area and wondered if highway 299 to Redding, south from Redding to highway 36 to highway 395...

Avoid 36 Eureka to Red Bluff. Not good for towing.
If you want to avoid curvy roads take 199 to Grants Pass, OR, I5 south to Mt Shasta, 89 to 44 to Susanville. This may be the fastest route from Crescent City to Reno, not the shortest.
299 to Redding has curves. It gains elevation with switchbacks over a mountain, then follows the river canyon. I have towed over it many times. Not a bad road at all, but it is NOT flat and straight.
