Crime Problems In South Baja California Sur

Pressure by Tourist and groups to make it like Costa Rico and elsewhere.
Tourists or Business People or People retired there can get a carry permit. It is tougher than the states but give you the ability to defend yourself.
Way too many victims and Tourists for government to ignore. Maybe the people and Tourtist could stop lot of the endemic crime down there.

It is near incredible what some tourists insist is their "right" to flaunt incredible amounts of wealth. They show up in a honky-tonk booze-eria with large diamond ear rings, bracelets, Rolex Oyster watches, cripes I've seen a belt buckle with a $20 gold piece. Tourists haul around three thousand dollar Nikon cameras with lenses and laptops worth mote than my car. To a danged bar? Down the boardwalk? Out onto the beach?

But it's not like someone is forcing these punks to tourist strips to rob. They go there because the pickings are fabulously rico. Let Darwin feed the ladrones. They can have my sports $5 wallet with expired credit cards and DL. They otter have fun with the counterfeit 500 and twin counterfeit 200-peso banknotes.

Don't carry more cash than necessary, don't leave anything visible in your car.

It's not just that "thug is a thug", it's that this is a zone of a recent MAJOR disaster. Cabo and La Paz were hit by Odille the most, people are angry, lost their income and homes. They are more eager now to join some "los malos" for an action like that on Isla Espirity Santo, because they are desperate to the point unimaginable to us, there are no fat wellfare checks and 3-course free meals there. It should calm down in a while.

Robberies like this have been going on in all over Mexico for as long as I can remember. I don't agree that eventually they will stop once the robberies are unfruitful. What are they going to do go to work in the fields? Those robbers are criminals and will more than likely continue to be criminals, unless caught or killed. Like the ones in Zihuat that were beheaded and hung from the main over crossing by the Knights Templar.
I agree that carry minimal baggage and don't flash your wealth. And that does apply everywhere.

No blood no bruises versus blood and bruises....Regardless of location.


If the thought of suffering such an adventure is too much to bear there is always Disney World. A person does not dare venture from Waikiki to areas of downtown Honolulu. Or take a wrong turn in Miami.

But watch what's visible inside your car. I was cleaned-out in Cabo, Wal-Mart a few years ago. They got a junked desktop computer, a flat panel monitor with a blank area display, a bottle jack with a severe leak and a pair of 10-gauge six dollar jumper cables. No, they didn't follow me sixty miles hone, outraged.

Mexico is NOT THE UNITED STATES. when convenience stores are robbed or cars jacked employees are not marched into a back room and executed down here. How many dozens of incidents where a savvy tourist like MEXICO KID who used to post here coughed-up a convincing looking phony wallet to an armed robber and they take it without comment?

Robbers are robbers but it would cause a sensation down here if a robber became angry after scoring wallet watch and jewelry then became angry and abusive if the wallet was not loaded with cash.

Your urban myths are as groundless as "Robbers who return miles to the scene of a carjacking because the engine stalled". If a robber opens a wallet in front of the victim and the victim sneers and laughs there are no guarantees.

Reality versus imagination sometimes has a wide median in between. If a crook injures or kills a US citizen the cop pressure increases like 10,000%. Robbers know this. And robbers like carjackers are live bait in CERESA the prison.

The answer is to leave expensive watches, jewelry, and extra cash in the rig. And don't try and turn this into something it isn't. It is an attempt to save people possible financial grief. Not scare people with runaway thoughts of Hannibal Lectur and the Doctor Mengele Kid rides again.

Most tourists are dumb as a stick. I see it all the time. Wallets bulging with cash. Expensive (like thousand dollar plus watches sometimes) rings with two carat diamonds, rubies or sapphires. Like fresh ground organic peanut butter in a mouse trap.

Some folks like using multi-thousand dollar cameras and lenses. They are at risk down here.

Just like with carjacking - defend by starting off with common sense preparation. There is no need to avoid the capes or La Paz. There is every reason to not be air-headed and baste yourself like a Christmas Goose.
