Crime Problems In South Baja California Sur

No, this is not a cookie-cutter cut n paste from the consulate.

I paid attention to this because my Mexican friends are talking about it and the news has hit the radio and newspapers.

There has been a disturbing rash of personal non-injury crime in the La Paz to San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas area.

When six gunmen invade a major San Lucas main tourist strip bar restaurant and rob all the patrons, it's time for a heads up. Same thing happened at The Office again in broad daylight on Medano beach. Another dozen or so tourists have been accosted in tourist areas. Brazen armed robberies.

A dozen tourists were robbed at gunpoint on Espiritu Santo island off of La Paz. More have been held up in downtown La Paz.

Is isn't time to freak out. Simply lock up most of your money and valuable rings and watches before going out on the town.

No injuries have been reported. No kidnapping, no roadblocks, no carjacking, nothing like that. Pointing a gun and demanding wallet or purse plus jewelery.

Take Care

When robbers start getting little or nothing they will stop.

Usually NOT the case........more likely they get frustrated with escalating violence

Plus, in a tense situation there is a potential for an unintentional disaster.

  • I cannot speak to the other incidents, but here is the article about the robberies at Isla Espirtu Santo: BCS Noticias

I live near the cental district of La Paz year-around. We have had more incidents this year for sure. Also, more drug related violence - our first drive-by shooting a few weeks ago.

It is not bad enough to cause me to leave or anything because it is still safer than the US city I left (Sacramento) but it is not something I like seeing here at all.
  • Mex: Can you please provide a link to a report on the crime problem. Google turns up nothing recent???
