Crossing into Saskatchewan from ND

We are headed to Banff, Jasper this fall. We will stop in Jamestown, ND then head to Regina, SK.
Reports have going thru customs at Portal and the drive on highways 39 & 47 is brutal.

Maybe go up thru Virden, Manitoba or keep heading west and cross at Fortuna, ND?

  • 2 years ago we crossed on US 281 thru the International Peace Gardens crossing. Its south of Brandon, Manitoba. Took a couple of minutes and we were on our way. No traffic at all. We stayed in Brandon that night.

It's not customs I am worried about! I've been going through customs in various countries for 52 years without a problem, let them search, I've got/carry nothing to hide
It's the truck traffic on the 2 highway that I understand is "brutal", and that's according to the govt. website.
    Looking for alternatives.
  • on our 2004 trip we passed thru at Portal, ND and it took all of 5 minutes.
we plan to go thru there again this year. The roads were good, we stayed the nite in Weyburn, SK at the city park. Now this was 12 years ago and things may be different this time.
  • What exactly can brutal mean? We just got back from the USA. They asked us to pull over and wait while a truck/trailer in front of us was being searched.

It took about five minutes for him to have us open fifth wheel compartments, went through the truck, and opened every cupboard and drawer in the rig. He searched under the pillows, in the fridge and freezer, and under the bed too.

Nothing was found, not one thing. We were on our way in about 15 minutes.

I am very sure that they know who we are, and what they have found in our various rigs before they come in, and the worst thing they have taken away was a bag of unlabeled cat crunchies, and a pack of green onions.

So, brutal maybe... or maybe not?
