Crossing US Canada and back conflicting info on dogs

We live in Canada but store our trailer in Birch Bay Washington, have been across the border too many times to count. The last time we crossed our dog did cause a delay the US Border officer had never seen a German Shepherd as big as ours so called over a colleague. Never asked about shots or anything else. He has his rabies and that's all he needs.
