- HorsedocExplorer IIactually 36 ends and becomes 16A on through the park to the town of Custer. You are right - do not turn up the hill and follow 16! This is the Iron Mtn road and has many tunnels - beautiful drive, but do it in a towed vehicle

You want to take hywy 36 off 79 that will take you straight into the east gate. 36 ends at the east gate and continues on as 16. do not turn right on 16 continue straight and stop at the east gate on the right.
Never enter from the East, but seems this would work well:
Take exit 61 toward Mt Rushmore/Crazy Horse/S Dakota 79 S
Keep left at the fork, follow signs for US 16/South Dakota 79 S
US-16 W/US-385 S/E Main St - sweetnoniExplorerspeaking of... pulling a 25 TT what route from 385 in nebraska, would you take to Custer SP?
- hellbird503ExplorerExit 61 to route 16 sounds like the way to go. Thanks for your help,Dave

Just got home from Rushmore. X2 on this one. This would be the truck route and misses all of the Rapid City stoplights. - DesertHawkExplorerNever enter from the East, but seems this would work well:

It's either 16 from the north, or Alt 16 from the east through Hermosa.
