You're not that old. It was World War 1 in which Mexico and Germany were "near" an alliance if I recall correctly.
Perhaps those negotiations took place at both wars?
At any rate, Columbus, New Mexico was invaded by Pancho Villa with his army of 500+ in 1916
There is a fascinating documentation at the Columbus Historical Society Museum in Columbus. They had a corresponding book in the gift shop but it was sold out when I visited.
