Dallas to Yellowstone- best non mountainous route

Hey! We've decided to take the kids to Yellowstone but I'm not crazy about the thought of driving a RV on mountain roads. Does anyone have a thought about this? Anyone have a better route? It would be even better if that route had some neat stops on it that might entertain my teens! I would GREATLY appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

  • I love the flat landers, shoot we only have a dozen or so passes with 6 percent grades for 14 or more miles either way, run away shoots, snow on the mountain tops, chain-up laws in the winter an herds of elk, antelope, deer that love the front end of cars and trucks and of course beautiful scenery so whats the problem :)

Thousands of RV'ers survive the west every year, if you drive safely and do not try to out do some of the idiots that think they can go 80mph up and down the HWY and byways out here you will have a very nice trip and see some exciting an very beautiful scenery ...

Just don't get on any cow paths, but I have to tell you going to were you are headed you have to cross some type of mountain pass, just depends on how high ....

    Safe travels
  • "Does anyone have a thought about this?"

Yes. Why do you fear of the mountains? So you'll never visit the Rockies? The Sierra Nevadas? Never drive Going to the Sun road? Those of us driving in the mountains are not wizards. Learn, and then enjoy the West.
  • we like the rock springs, wy, to pinedale, wy, hoback junction, then up to Jackson, Tetons and into yellowstone from the south. Jackson will have some white water rafting on the Snake River, and a ski lift and a shootout on the square every afternoon.
Yellowstone will have horse back riding, wagon ride, hiking, boat excursions on the lake.
wi fi will be iffy in the parks, but available around the lodges and visitor centers and up by Mt. Washburn. Take binoculars.
  • Good route suggestion by Busskipper. From Alpine you could continue on route 26 to Idaho Falls then route 20 up to West Yellowstone. No mountain driving that way. That said, my preferred route would be to go north on route 89 through the Snake River Canyon (easy grade) to Jackson and Grand Teton NP and spend a few days with those beautiful mountains then continue north to the south entrance to Yellowstone.

X2 on do not use route 22 over the Teton pass west of Jackson. Been there, done that, never again.
  • You realize that Yellowstone is a mountain top?

I25 doesn't cross any mountains - except the Raton Pass on the NM/CO border.

I80 doesn't either, though it crosses the Continental Divide.

The west entrance from Cody, and the NE entrance are the only ones with 'mountain driving'. Everything else is broad valleys (OH, and avoid Teton Pass west from Jackson). OTherwise the driving isn't any more scary than a freeway overpass.

Coming from the east US16 over the Bighorn Mtns is mountain driving, but from the south you don't have to use that.

Could you give us a little more info - What does everyone like to do?
How much time? - Where else are we thinking of going? - Ages? ...........

    Edit 1
Dallas to Alpine - Jackson - Tetons - Yellowstone Water tends to be Fun for Kids - so much more you could do if we could include the Mountains - Cody is some fun? Wind River Canyon - If you come in by Alpine - Flaming Gorge and Dinosaur NM are just down the Road.

Look over this group of Family trips for pointers.

Really at a loss - as WE LOVE COLORADO - lots to do - Beautiful - Hikes, Sites, Adventures, FUN.

Best of Luck, will be interesting to learn and read the replies.
