Agree with DougE on the route. If you have a bum arm you really don't want to try the 101 route as it is pretty twisty. Your only real concern will be snow in the Siskiyou mountains on I5. Check the weather and lay over in Redding if it is bad otherwise try to cross in early afternoon. The road departments do a great job of keeping this open.
To avoid LA I would consider jogging North at Blythe CA on 95 to I40 then West on to 58 into Bakersfield and on to I5.
In Jan/Feb this is about as safe and easy as it will get. Be careful and have a safe trip what ever route you choose.
