I did Austin TX to Bend OR in mid november about a dozen years ago .
I got caught in a Texas ice storm about 2 hours west of Austin TX .
That was my first and only WalMart campout because I had to stop driving .
The weather cleared up about an hour before El Paso .
From I-10 near San Bernardino I went north to proceed by Mojave CA over the Tehachapi Pass .
Clear driving past Redding until I got to Dunsmuir on I-5 .
The CHP closed i-5 for 12 hours at Dunsmuir and I spent another night in a snow storm . Redding was still above freezing when I left there .
What did I learn ?
