Dallas TX to Portland Oregon route around mtns

Thank you all for your responses, even "Old Guy"s suggestion of the panama canal! I enjoyed the history of the areas that some of you shared. I'll take everyone's suggestions into account. Depending on when my house sells will dictate when I head northwest. Perhaps I can avoid bad weather if that occurs closer to spring.
