I'm in the buisness of doing crash analysis and what the article showed had no statistical validity. Also it ignores the fact that interstate freeways are on the order of 50 times safer than surface streets per mile driven. For the most part, if you look at the map, it's just the highest volume roads. There is a strong correlation between volume and crashes.
Another point, you aren't the typical driver involved in a fatal crash. Most RV'ers avoid rush hour and late night when most of the fatal crashes occur. They also usually aren't making agressive high speed manuvers.
