I recently saw an article, in he Atlanta paper, that said that Interstate 285 around Atlanta is the most deadly interstate highway in the US.

The interstate mentioned is I-285 or "the perimeter". This is why those of us who have lived in Atlanta and/or have to travel through often, urge RVer's to go straight through On I-75 or I-85. There is a total disregard for speed limits on the perimeter and it is full of 18 wheelers. It is very difficult for drivers who are unfamiliar with the lane changes to make split second decision about where they need to be. I had rather sit in standstill traffic for 1/2 an hour than subject myself to that. lizzie

I've given up on Atlanta completely. I've tried going straight through and going around. Even went through on Sunday once. Just as bad. All it takes is one fender bender to mess everything up. When I'm headed to Florida from Cincinnati, I head south on I-65 all the way to Pensacola, FL, then east on I-10 to either I-75 South or I-95 South, depending on my destination. It adds miles, but my blood pressure appreciates the detour.

I saw the same article. I'm in the buisness of doing crash analysis and what the article showed had no statistical validity. Also it ignores the fact that interstate freeways are on the order of 50 times safer than surface streets per mile driven. For the most part, if you look at the map, it's just the highest volume roads. There is a strong correlation between volume and crashes.Another point, you aren't the typical driver involved in a fatal crash. Most RV'ers avoid rush hour and late night when most of the fatal crashes occur. They also usually aren't making agressive high speed manuvers.Relax and enjoy the ride.

WHEN are they going to start ticketing these dangerous idiots? :RI did that 'once' never again. Now I plan my trip thru Georgia coming from the North to stop at a CG right outside the city limits. I get up around 4:00 am and use I-285. It's a breeze at that time of day and limited amount of 18 wheelers.

I'll cast a vote for I71 between Cincinnati and Louisville and particularly the area approaching Louisville. The interstate is cut out of limestone rock. I guess there wasn't enough money to blast rock for a decent shoulder. No place for you to go if something bad happens in front of you. And since people love to follow too close...well, you know the rest of the story.

I've thought about this one for a while. In and around Boston fatal crashes occur almost daily. I think the better mindset is ALL interstates are deadly (as are secondary roads, back roads, etc.) when one drives carelessly or recklessly. IMHO one of the reasons we have many issues that we do is we label one (fill in the blank) safer than another and let our guard down instead of treating all equally.

No attempt is made to control traffic speed on 285. The last time I was on it the speed limit signs said 55 and traffic was running 75. This was 12 years ago. If you did not run 75 you were ran over. Some drivers were doing 80+. Lane changes pulling a 5th wheel were impossible. For this reason we always bypass Atlanta at any cost! Choose another route even if it means more miles. I'm not sure what the posted limit is now but you can be assured law enforcement has no presence in the area.
