Denali Highway

Has anyone driven the Denali Highway lately? I heard a month or so ago that it was rough. I know there's been some rain and not much maintenance so I figure it's pretty bad.

Thanks.

  • You'd better check your rental...any damage or issues and you're stuck with it.
  • I was wondering the same thing about the Denali. We have a travel trailer and truck.

We drove the Dempster, but not with the trailer. We also did the Top of the World and stuff was all over the inside of the trailer and it was filthy on the outside. Also just got back from Teklanika where it rained the whole time we were there. More crud all over the truck and trailer.

I'm questioning the wisdom of driving the Denali from Cantwell to Paxson.

    Some companies allow it.

I actually did drive it 2 years ago in my Journey pulling my Taurus. Then it was mainly washboard from end to end.

What I'm looking for now is current conditions. We will be renting this year was considering it.

    Thanks.

  • Check with your rental outfit.... many of them prohibit use of rental vehicles on the Denali, the McCarthy Road and the Dalton.
  • We took our Class A and toad across it mid August last year. It was hunting season so the road was rough and every camping spot was full, but it was still worth seeing again. We averaged 25 mph and got very, very dirty :)

  • Depends upon the maintenance. We drove it last summer. The road graders were ahead of us and it was a decent gravel road for most of the way. But, when it wasn't, it really wasn't.
  • I took my Tiger over it last summer & camped overnight at a beautiful turnout. Gorgeous scenery. Part of the eastern portion is paved but most is dirt and rocks. I don't think I'd take your rig up there. Plenty of beautiful scenery in Alaska that is accessible for everyone.
  • I would not drive that road with your Journey or Taurus. Pickup or 4WD drive no problem. Lots of ruts, large rocks, and corduroy areas.

Sure is a lot of pretty scenery though if you have the proper vehicle. There is an awesome camping spot on top of a 4WD knob about 1/3 of the way across coming from Cantwell.
