Destin Fl to Gaffney SC

going from Destin Fl to Gaffney SC for the Freightliner camp. What is the best route. I am driving a 37 foot DP towing. This will be at the end of February. Tolls are OK - just want the easiest route.\
plus - can you recommend a RV Park about halfway to Gaffney?
THX
  • We just towed Destin to Greenville, SC (our home). We've driven this route dozens of times, as we lived in Destin prior.

We go up through Crestview to Andalusia, AL. From there over to I-65 through Montgomery, straight through the middle of Atlanta and I85 all the way.

You can make that drive in a car with limited stops in 7.25 hours to Gaffney.

For the first part, I'd recommend US-431 up to Columbus GA, then onto I-185. The US-431 drive is very nice--four lanes almost all of the way, through nice rolling hills and farms, and where US-431 is not four lanes (like going through Eufaula), it's completely manageable. Take the loop to the east around Dothan. There's a Pilot right at the start of the loop if you need fuel.

Half-way to Gaffney is right around my home town (LaGrange GA). You can jump off I-185 and go a short way east into Pine Mountain, where there's a nice Outdoor Resorts RV park, or stay at FDR State Park, or go west a little ways to West Point Lake and stay at one of the Corps campgrounds there.

There are a million opinions (mostly hysterical, in my view) about getting through Atlanta. Nonetheless, my preferred course heading north is to take I-285 around the city to the east. I put myself trailing a sensibly driven 18-wheeler, take my time, relax, and emerge at the northeast corner of the city relatively calm and stress-free. Remember, despite appearances to the contrary, those people are not actually trying to kill you.

From there, just follow your nose up I-85 to Gaffney. If you're traveling with children, don't say anything about the peach water tower in Gaffney looking like a giant butt, or your DW will accuse you of being a bad influence on your children forever. Trust me. I know.

220 miles further to go to Jax. 321/231 to I-85 east of Montgomery. I would do it in one day so you hit Atl mid day and go straight through on 85. North of downtown Atl you need to be in the left lanes for 85. I use the HOV lane but you need to hammer down in it.
  • If you want to stay on the interstate: 10 East to Jacksonville, 95 n to 26n in SC 85n to Graffney, SC
