Detoit to Las Vegas in March

We are planning to take a trip from our home outside Detroit, MI to
Las Vegas in March. At this time we are planning to fly, but I'd much rather take the motor home. Am I correct in assuming that it would be unwise due to weather concerns to try to make that trip so early in the year in the RV, or is there a route that would be viable?

  • Ro,

In spite of what has been said, it really is no more issue than anything else. If trucks are moving, you can move. If you are set up to be self contained, you don't need to worry about finding a campground (we don't).

If the weather (Sonny is gone) turns that you want to go south first. Go that way. Buy fuel at Alexis Rd and if FMCA, plan to over night at the free FHU in Cinci. Bite south and west from there. You should know Michigan's weather, if you don't like it, wait five minutes.

We live on the other side of the TWP. My sig doesn't say New Boston because nobody know where that is. I don't know how that they cannot know, it is just up the road from Waltz.

  • In the middle of the traditional route (i.e. Route 66 from Chicago) I can say from Missouri to Las Vegas it will usually be Spring for real, but Illinois, Indiana, southern Michigan can be iffy in March.

This does not keep me from driving to Michigan in March for family birthdays or early Easter, but I watch the weather to decide when and which way to go, and I don't take the RV that early in the year because so few RV parks are open before April.
  • As long as you are headed south and not directly into a known storm I would take the RV.
    How long are you staying?
  • just take the RV, watch the weather and be prepared for the unknown, this winter is crazy. You will be on the road for 30+ hours each way.

winterizing and traveling could be a problem.

If you check the weather and get a couple of fair days, you could take I-75 to Louisville, KY, I-65 to Nashville, TN, I-40 west to Kingman, AZ, and US93 to LV.

This looks like a good possibility for me. I'm going to watch the weather forecasts closely and see if we can make it work with the RV instead of flying. I'm retired, so I don't have a firm window of time that I need to adhere to.

Thank you all for your help.
  • Checking the weather forecast before leaving would be crucial. My first thought would be get south as fast as you can. But even in March you could still encounter ice/snow along I-40 in OK and TX panhandle and other states in one of those late season storms.

  • I have driven from North Dakota to vegas for race numerous times.Have never taken motorhome.
I take I94 to I90 to Whitehall,Montana then 55 and 41 to Dillon. This route keeps you off mountain pass at Butte and Yellowstone,55 41 is very good 2 lane road.Have never had bad roads when I have went.

KOA in billings and Dillon were open all year long

    have fun
    and good luck dave
