It may be helpful to note that 1 November is reserved for honoring los niƱos muertos and 2 November is for los difuntos adultos.
Los panteones get thoroughly cleaned and repainted in the days immediately before November, home and graveyard shrines are erected, some of the home shrines are genuine works of art with arranged flowers and elaborate candles and motive candles.
While chicanos brutos pervert the honor by drunken near-riots in places like Sta Ana and Pomona California the tradition continues in Mexico. The further from the USA the more traditonal and reverent the ceremonies seem to get (numbers wise).
Where children play Oca, on the tombstones and shrines of their ancestors the observance is most traditional. I much prefer this observance to the commercial mayhem of Halloween which totally ignores a person's ancestors.
