Dillon Pass in Badlands NP?

We'd like to drive through Badlands NP and wondered if we'd have trouble navigating from Wall east on Hwy 240 through Dillon Pass or would it be better take "Big Foot Pass Rd" into the NP and avoid the section with Dillon Pass?

We're in a 30' Class A & towing a Jeep.

Thanks!

  • Hi Karen, We are from Indiana too and we drove the loop, west to east, a few years ago in our 32' fifth wheel on our way home from Montana and loved it. We even stayed in the park campground one nite as it was later in the day when we got there. That was our second visit to the park since '79 when we lived on Ellsworth AFB. I had absolutely no problems with the hills or curves. Enjoy the drive.
  • Thanks for the advice. I didn't think 240 from Wall looked like it should be a problem but it's good to hear from those who have driven it in something larger than a van!
  • Yep, just do the loop in the direction you are traveling though East to west is better because you get to see the visitor center first. We stopped by in late June 2005. With the heat, a couple hours was all we needed. However, it was enough that it's on our to-do list when we can make it back out in cooler weather for a couple of days.

This is the way to go...it's Hwy 240 through the park from Wall to Exit 131 on I-90. It's an easy drive. Have fun!
  • The name 'Dillon pass' is giving you the wrong idea. On Google Maps terrain mode I only see a 2800' contour line in this area. That means elevation differences are less than 200'. Looking at the bigger picture I see a high of 3200' on a rim to the north, and 2600' in the valley bottom. This is not mountains, nor a deep canyon; just a rough patch of valley walls.
  • Go south from Wall and do the trip eastbound and come back onto I-90 at exit 131.
  • Just stay on 240 thru Badlands NP until it comes back to I-90. I've driven thru a couple of times in a 'C' pulling a toad and don't even remember Dillon Pass. I wouldn't want to walk thru the Badlands, but the drive isn't bad.
  • I'd like to go west through the park but we'll be heading home...which unfortunately is east! Sadly, we aren't staying overnight but can take most of the day to make the drive.

    Thanks!
  • I would suggest doing the loop. get off west bound at exit 131 and come into Park then take the road over Dillion pass and come in at Wall.
There is a rocket museum and a private Prairie dog city near the exit.
Steep incline into the park campground area either way you go. It is something to be aware of.
We had no problem with our 30 footer towing XL-7 on either road. Take your time and enjoy!
