Direction by Coin

our plan was to do a quick south dakota trip, mt. rushmore st. park, etc. however one night we thought perhaps just start driving to see where we end up.

i started thinking, lets eliminate the direction by flipping a coin, and roll.

i assume some of you aimlessly head out from time to time. once your going, do you seek out destinations, attractions, or see what you see, and keep moving forward?

  • The Aborigines in Oz have an expression " going Walkabout " . We do most of our trips that way . Just take off and go from thrift store to Wal-Mart and many back roads in between . We try to stop at least once a day and " skip a rock "at a creek or river . Ain't no hurry !

We are picking up visiting family from Holland in Seattle and have no specific plans for the next few weeks. We will pull our trailer and see where we end up!

2X We often follow the front of the truck & have never been let down.
  • We have a Passport America book (and online), a COE for all states book, a State park book and a Woodalls. Our plans are usually to the next campground (or sometimes, the next Walmart).
  • Exploring is the finest way to vacation. I head out without destination and find the most beautiful spots imaginable. I like pulling up for the night in the woods, at fishing access sites and public access around dams and rural "Park 'n' Ride" lots. Here in Michigan, hunters develop and maintain thousands of camping locations, usually a simple "two-track" that leaves and rejoins maintained roads. These are often only 50 feet or so long and unsed for most of the year. Dead-end roads are great, often caused when interstates were built. Usually surrounded by farmland or woods, these places get little traffic, yet are maintained and easy to find.
If you belong to VFW, Moose or similar orgs, ask about overnight parking.. These are great when there is a dance or social evevt (Steak night, BBQ, or Friday Fish Fry) going on. Call ahead, or arrive and ask around.

Use your imagination. No need to chase campground slots. Do not overlook scenic view sites, historical marker pullouts and rest areas along old highways that were bypassed by freeways 50 years ago. Many still exist, about 50-60 miles apart.

Nope, I always plan ahead. To much can go wrong without having a plan.

I have to disagree...the more you plan, the more there is to go wrong.
If you have no plan nothing can go wrong with it :B

  • I don't like going to bed at night KNOWING what time I HAVE TO get up in the morning. Too much pressure.

I sure don't like knowing what DATE I have to be some place unless it's really really special. (Yosemite is special enough to set destination dates but that's about it.)

I'm glad to be at that stage in life that no vacation/arrival/departure dates need to be set very often. I go by weather and whether I want to...and that's the way I like it.
  • When I first got my rig I planned everything - then I discovered that half the fun of having an RV is just following my nose. Unfortunately with today's gas prices following my nose is getting expensive.
  • When I was growing up we would get in the car after church and just head out of town, soon dad would say "choose" and one of us would choose a road off the one we were on, and we would start our adventure.
Many times since (69 years) I have wished we could be that abandoned.
I planned our summer trip a couple of months ago, had it on the computer with conf. numbers-all set--NO!!
My sister had to have both legs amputated because of diabetes, her husband had a heart attack, quad by-pass, my other brother inlaw also had an amputation and so goes our trip. Sitting in the same spot for three months.
