Dirty Rigs - Cleaning Stop Points?

I hope we get to meet on your way out too. Maybe you'll grace us with an overnight visit at our cabin. Can't offer too much in the way of services but the view is grand. And I hear the hosts are good people :B

Hey all - Appreciated the input on the washing, and also the windshield replacement.

We stopped last night at Congdon Yukon Campground, and had a great space overlooking the lake. One of only two, and they are actually a shared access, so would be best with someone you were traveling with. (We were the first ones in the park, and everyone that came in after us, decided it was too tight of quarters to use the other site to get the lake view. Sites 2 and 3...).

Today we pushed on into Tok. Timed it just perfect with the major roadwork on the ALCAN just before the border - following the water truck as he sprayed the dirt road prepping for new surface. We had more muck and dirt then we'd ever seen on the toad, or the sides of the coach - so glad we did not go ahead and wash while in Whitehorse. At Sourdough, and used their wash to clean the toad today, will look around some more before deciding what to do on the RV.

We did some more checking, and had picked Badger Glass to help us. Then thought why not call the Honda Dealer mentioned in Fairbanks - yep, they use Badger Glass too. So, will drive the CRV into Fairbanks in the AM, and Badger Glass will install a new windshield. The DW will make a day of cleaning the inside of the RV, and her and the Dawg will enjoy being away from my bad jokes:)!

I had a very nice talk with Sue yesterday, and she was very kind at making sure we had everything we need for temporary repairs on the windshield. (I used clear packing tape on the outside and inside, and it survived today ride on the roller coaster stretch around Beaver Creek, very well.)

Sue is a good example of what RV'ing is all about. People helping people, while also having a good time, on a common hobby. She's pretty good people, and we hope to meet her on our rebound South.

Not just the CGs of the North but all CGs want RVs in them that look like they just came from the dealership. Makes their CG look pretty & desirable to stay in. However, many CGs don't want youu doing what it takes to keep that rig in showroom condition on their property.

Go figure.

On your way through Yukon, look for a tourist publication titled, "Road Trip". It's a decent booklet with lots of info and ads.

BUT, it also has coupons for fuel discounts at various locations including a 10 cent per gallon discount at Young's Chevron.

Also discount coupons for fuel at Teslin, Carmacks, Rancheria.

We are in Tok tonight, leaving in the AM. We used the Northern Energy, west of the Tok Cutoff intersection. Their diesel was 4.49, free wash - for as long as you want to wash. After Top of the World we spent about 3 hours there today washing rig and toad. Also free potable water and dump. If anyone wants to dry camp, Youngs Chevron still allows you to overnight in their lot with fillup. Their price was 0.10 more per gallon.

We waited till Tok and used the RV. wash at the Sourdough CG. It was 2$ for 5 minutes. We mainly used it to rinse as we washed by hand to get the dirt off. It was in bad shape by Tok! Most of our dirt came from the very light rain on roads that hadn't seen enough rain to wash them clean. The bumps on the Denali Hwy shook most of the dust!

You might try calling ahead to Warren Auto Body in Tok (907-883-2949), but it is likely they will have to order a windshield from Fairbanks or even Anchorage.

There are a number of auto body/glass shops in North Pole and Fairbanks. Plus there is Kendall Honda with a parts and service department at 888-482-8513. Due to the fact that broken windshields are a fact of life in Alaska, they may be your quickest replacement.

We're going ALCAN to Tok. LOL! I just sent you a PM before seeing this post. We were leaving from Hi Country RV in the AM, but had more windshield related luck. The gent in the space next to us, backed into a temporary WiFi pole (The park is putting a new grid, and they have several temporary poles mounted so they can move them around as the set up the grid.) It crashed hard into our CRV windshield leaving about a two inch deep impact zone...

Just another adventure to talk about during happy hour.

If so, you won't find too much mud this week as the forecast is for sunshine. Highway is in decent shape too.

If going by way of Dawson City and then Top of the World, you might collect some grime on the Top of the World and Taylor Highways, as there is much gravel & dirt road.

So we're now going to stay and see if a Whitehouse Glass Shop or perhaps the Honda Dealer, can get it replaced for us in a timely turnaround. If not, we'll call ahead to Tok and see if they can order a replacement in and have it ready for us when we arrive.

One thing for sure, we timed the weather in Whitehorse very well. Just a great day, with a nice hike down by the river today, and Miles Canyon yesterday.

We kind of chuckled, as in BC we had our coaches windshield damaged when a Must Pass The RV and Water Tank Truck over the middle median of Fort St John pickup driver blew by us probably going 100 in a 50 zone. Had that patched when we went back to Dawson Creek.

The CRV is not a patch job:)! So we'll see how luck we are on finding one in stock someplace in Whitehorse.

We stayed at the Tundra RV park in Tok. The filling station right next door to it had a wash bay - might be the Tesoro folks are mentioning. Like VeeByes, I try to wash the grime off whenever I can - sometimes it's a bucket of water from a roadside stream and a scrub brush - but it works fine! The summer we visited we got free car washes every day - thanks to Mother Nature!!! ST
