Dirty Rigs - Cleaning Stop Points?

We're in Whitehorse enjoying Hi Country RV Park. Nice people, and we have a nice back in spot away from the ALCAN. And, free internet now, as they are beefing up their system.

They also have a nice RV Wash Station. I was going to wash our rig here, but one of the staff commented that most people wash their rigs coming on the way South, not North. Either moving on into Tok, or Dawson and via Top of The World, you pick up substantial road grime and dust.

So, figured we'd now wait until we get over the rough spots, as we're heading into Tok.

Question: Can anyone recommend a good wash stop once we're in Alaska? We can keep touching up the basements and windows until Fairbanks if needed... But if a good stop along the way, say in Tok, is recommended - we'd go for it.

TIA,
Smitty

The Tesoro station is 1/2 mile northwest of the Visitor Center in Tok. Not only does it have a very high pressure wash, but also an RV sanidump. Both are free with fill-up, which can be as little as 10 gallons.

We used the Tesoro wash in both directions--to and from Alaska--last summer to get off dried-on highway construction mud. And the weather doesn't matter because they keep the construction zones watered down to reduce dust. Nearly every one of them was muddy, regardless of temperature or rainfall. The exception was just west of Destruction Bay where they had laid down the "chips," but had not yet put down the "seal."
  • You heading to Tok via the Alaska Highway?
If so, you won't find too much mud this week as the forecast is for sunshine. Highway is in decent shape too.

If going by way of Dawson City and then Top of the World, you might collect some grime on the Top of the World and Taylor Highways, as there is much gravel & dirt road.

How long you in Whitehorse for?
  • Have also used the 'wash with fillup' in Tok. As much as I like to keep truck & trailer clean I resign myself to the fact that when traveling the North it is pointless to try to keep it clean. Guaranteed the day after washing it will get rained on & muddied up all over.
  • Have made 3 trips and I wash every chance I get. You need to get the chemicals off the rig that they put on the roads in the construction areas.

There is a wash rack at Dawson City RV Park, Dawson City, YT. Fee for washing.

Riverview RV Park, North Pole, AK, has a free wash station if you are staying there.
  • Tok RV Village had a fixed price wash station in 2011 when we were there. Price was determined by type and then you could use it until you think it's clean. For us with a popup truck camper it was great after crossing the Top of the World in the rain, did I mention MUD.
  • Fairbanks had a regular do-it-yourself wash with pressure wands that worked well. It was not far from a campground on a river bank, but I just can't remember the name of the rv park. We had a fifth wheel then and had to back it in. It was a little tight, but not too bad.
  • Try Sourdough Campground in Tok, it is on the Tok Cutoff towrd Glenallen.
  • You seem to be travelling our planned route when we take our first big trip across Canada. Going to have to look up Tok we want to go through Dawson and do the Top of the world.
    Have a safe trip
