Dodge City to Pueblo, CO HH?

Planning a trip across Kansas to Cheyenne Mountain State Park in Colorado Springs. Map program includes a stretch of Colorado road HH which appears to be gravel. This seems to be a shortcut to rejoin US 50 which drops down to LaJunta.

I will be towing a 34' fifth-wheel. Wondering if someone local knows whether I should take this short cut or avoid it and stay on US 50?

The stretch of road unpaved is shown as 7 miles. I am looking for specific local knowledge, not general comments about road surfaces.
  • Thanks, all. It is really not a problem, Just wondering why Google Maps includes this leg. If I can post a photo, I'll show the section:

  • We came that exact route just last week. We stayed on Route 50 the entire way. All of those lettered roads seem to be unpaved roads that perhaps connect private land? There are many of them.
  • I looked up the route you posted. That highway goes right by a lake we where we used to water ski. That does start clear back by Las Animas. It is way out of the way. Just make sure you stay on 50 when you leave Lamar, you will take a jog through Las Animas (still 50) and then on to La Junta and Pueblo.

  • Thanks, Dave, that is exactly the kind of information I was hoping for. Just to locate that route I was asking about: At Las Animas it was to keep west on CO 194 and then CO 266 on to Rocky Ford. There is a short stretch (about 7 miles it seems) between 194 and 266 which is signed as CO HH. Does that help to identify the route? I don't mind backroads generally. In Texas we have Farm to Market roads which I use all the time. What caused me to question the route above is that the few miles of HH seem to be gravel.

I like the rig in your signature. We have a 2008 Duramax/Allison 2500 pulling a HitchHiker II 32.5. We have been all over Colorado and much of the mountain West and feel really secure on the passes with the tow/haul mode engaged.

Thank you, again, for your help. We will spend almost a month in Colorado in June/July. We are coming across Kansas because of a visit to Chanute, KS where our trailer was manufactured--for some service.

  • I grew up in La Junta. I have never heard of a detour or route HH. Highway 50 goes from the Kansas border all the way west through Colorado. Just stay on 50.
